AmandaNimonoftheScottPolarResearchInstitutespentthreesouthernhemispheresummersatCuvervilleIslandinAntarcticastudyingpenguinbehaviortowardshumans.“Anestingpenguinwillreactverydifferentlytoapersonrapidlyandcloselyapproachingthenest,”saysNimon.“Firsttheyexhibitlargeandprolongedheartratechangesandthentheyoftenfleethenestleavingitopenforpredators(掠夺者toflyinandremoveeggsorchicks.”Theartificialegg,speciallyfortheproject,monitoredboththeparentwhohadbeen‘disturbed’whentheeggwasplacedinthenestandtheotherparentastheybothtookitinturnstoguardthenest.However,BorisCulik,whomonitoredtheAdeliepenguins,believesthatNimon’sfindingsdonotinvalidatehisownresearch.Hepointsoutthatspeciesbehavedifferently–andNimon’sworkwaswithGentoopenguins.NimonandhercolleaguesbelievethatCulik’sresearchwasmethodologicallyflawedbecausethemonitoringofpenguins’responsesneededcapturingandrestrainingthebirdsandfittingthemwithbeart-ratetransmitters.Therefore,arguesNimon,itwouldnotbesurprisingiftheybecamestressedonseeingahumansubsequently.
