Background music may seem harmless but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becvoming increasingly difficult to go shoppin or eat a meal without listening to music.

To begin with, "muzak"(音乐广播网) was intended simply to create a soothing atmosphere. Recently, however, it's become a big business ---- thanks in part to recent research. Dr. Ronald Milliman, an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost sales or increase factory production by as much as a third.

But, it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always answer. Dr. Milliman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play up-tempo music to keep the customers moving ---- unless of course, the resulting indigestion leads to complaints!

41. The reason why background music is so pupular is that _______.

We often speak of an artist as creating something and of a craftsman as making something. The artist has the desire to create or achieve something original, while the craftsman's aim is to prodcue something familiar and expected.

We may say, then that originality is what distinguishes art from craft and is the measure of artistic greatness or importance. Unfortunately, originality is also very hard to define; the usual synonyms(同义词) --- uniqueness, novelty(创新) ---- do not help us very much, and the dictionaries tell us only that an original work must not be a copy, reproduction, imitation, or translation. What they fail to point out is that originality is always relative: there is no such things as a completely originall work of art. Thus, if we want to rate works of art on an "Originality scale," our problem does not lie in deciding whether or not a given work is original, since the obvious copies and reproductions are for the most part easy enough to eliminate, but in establishing just exactly how original it is. To do so is not impossible. However, the difficulities involved in our task are so great that we cannot hope for more than less satisfactory and incomplete answers.

45. We may conclude from reading the passange that a painting by an artist who has been

There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama came from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world, even the seasonal changes, as unpredictable, and THEY sought, ghrough various means, to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained the mysterieds of certain events. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama.

Those who believe that drama grew out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theatre because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supper natural beings, and acted out the desired effect ----- success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the cycle of seasons --- as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.

Another theory traces the theatre's orgin from the human interest in storytelling. According to this view, tales are gradually developed, at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person, aided with the imitations of animal movements and sounds.

Certainly no creature in the sea is odder than the common sea cucumber(海参). All living creature, especially human beings, have their peculiarities, but everything about the little sea cucumber seems unusual. What else can be said about a BIZARRE animal that eats mud, feels almost continuously day and night but can live without eating for long periods, and can be poisonous but is considered delicious food?

For some fifty million years, the sea cucumber has stuck to its diet of mud. It is adaptable enough to live attached to rocks by its tube feet, under rocks in shallow water, or on the surface of mud flats. Common in cool water on both Atlantic and Pacific shores, it has the ability to suck up mud or sand and digest whatever nutrients are present.

Sea cucumbers come in a variety of colors, ranging from black to reddish-brown to sand-color and nearly white. One form even has vivid purple spots. Usually the creatures are cucumber-shaped --- hence their name --- and because they are typically rock inhabitants, this shape, combined with flexibility, enables them to squeeze into crevices(缝隙) where they are safe from predators(掠事者) and ocean currents.

But the most spectacular thing about the sea cucumber is the way it defends itself. Its major enemies are fish and crabs. When attacked, it shoots all its internal organs into the water. In time, it will regenerate itself.

Writing:

Possible version:

From the table, we can see the increase of the average listening scores of the Senior Grade Three students in a certain class. The score added up to 21.5 in the eighth test while they were only 18.7 in the first test. Therefore, it can be predicated that the listening scores are to be on the rise in the future.

There are chiefly two reasons for the increase. Firstly, teachers and students have realized the importance of listening and have taken all measures to improve the students’ listening ability. Secondly, with the development of “the quality-oriented education”, the teachers are generally adopted more effective teaching methods in listening.

In spite of what is mentioned above, there are still some problems. The table indicates the average listening scores were still not very satisfactory. Hence, the situation is still serious and how to improve the students’ listening ability is still a challenging task.
