Aren't they all our children?

There are few things in this life more difficult to experience than the loss of one's child. Jim Wallis, in WHO SPEAKS FOR GOD, tells a story that happened during the war in Sarajevo. A reporter who was covering the violence in the middle of the city saw a little girl shot by a gunman.

The reporter rushed to the aid of a man who was now holding the child. He helped them both into his car and sped off to a hospital.

"Hurry, my friend," the man urged, "my child is still alive." A moment or two later he pleaded, "Hurry, my friend, my child is still breathing." A little later he said, "Hurry, my friend, my child is still warm.'

When they got to the hospital, the young girl was gone. "This is a terrible task for me," the distraught man said to the reporter. "I must go and tell her father that his child is dead."

I looked at the man in surprise and said, "I thought she was your child."

The man replied, "No, but aren't they all our children?"

I think that is one of the great questions of our age that deserves (该得到) an answer.

Aren't they all our children? Those on our side of the border as well as those on the other side? Those of our nation no more or less than those of another?

Aren't they all our children? The well-educated and the under-educated? The well-fed and the under-fed? Those who are secure(安全的) and those who are at risk?

Aren't they all our children? If we say yes, can we ever again pit them against each other? "If we have no peace," said Mother Teresa, "it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other."

There may be no greater question for our generation. And how we answer that question will determine the shape of our world for years to come.

59. Which can best express the point of a yes to the question "Aren't they all our children"?

A. Health. B. Love. C. Wealth. D. Peace.

B

Driving to a friend's house on a recent evening, I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above my friend's rooftops. I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it was that most city people were living a limited life. Myself included. Usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors.

My friend had also seen it. He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him then. It had touched much of his life.

I know the feeling. Last December I took my seven-year-old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip. Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known, a bottomless well of silence.

And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.

Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, I thought: Before long, I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains and perhaps write, but not in anger. I may become an old man there and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cold silent night and touch the moon.

A. didn't like the city life B. failed to see the full moon

63. Which of the following should be the best title for the text?

A. Touched by the moon B. A bottomless well of silence

Ever since she was a baby, Heather, aged 5, has watched her parents regularly turn off lights that aren't needed and put the day's newspapers, cans, bottles, jars, and other recyleables (可回收物) into a big, yellow bin--that is, if they can't find a second life for the discarded items in their own home first. Plastic packaging, pieces of colored paper, bits of yarn, and small pieces of broken toys are dropped into a basket that the whole family goes through whenever they need supplies for an art project. Recently, after seeing a bit of shiny paper on the floor, Heather picked it up and said, "This is pretty. I'll put it in the art basket." Already, like parents, like daughter.

Heather's effort to recycle a piece of paper more than throw it away is a tiny gesture with a big message. It shows that even young children can learn about saving materials and resources, and to a greater degree, protecting the planet, in age-proper ways. It also shows that your child is so familiar with your ways that it is easy to become an environmental (环境) role model. But because children are more likely to want to care for something they have a personal share in, it's as important to introduce your child to the natural world as it is to teach her ways to protect it.

This doesn't require walk long camping trips into the wilderness -- although those can be fun, delighting experiences for the whole family. Children can learn about nature in their own backyard, in a park, in a community garden, and on trips to the beach or mountains. There's more good news: Giving your child chances to connect with nature can also help her develop crucial literacy, language, math, science, social studies, art, problem-solving, and research skills.

68. The underlined word "discarded" probably means" ".

A. waste B. important C. small D. dirty

69. Which is right according to the text?

A. The family is quite poor. B. The family members love each other.

C. The parents are proud of saving materials. D. The parents sat an example for the daughter.

70. The text suggests that children .

A. love recycling things B. are curious about things

C. can learn to protect nature D. should act the way as their parents

71. What's the author's suggestion about introducing a child to the natural world?

A. Going on a camping trip. B. Traveling to the wildness.

C. Learning from the parents. D. Playing in such places as a park.

Finding a Northeast Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific has long been the goal of sailors and governments. Now, within days, such a journey is expected to be completed for the first time.

Early next week the German-owned ships, Beluga Fraternity and Beluga Foresight, will go into the Dutch port of Rotterdam. It is the end of a two-month voyage from South Korea across the vast waters of the Arctic, where an ice-melt has at last made it a possibility for ships to cross the commonly impassable course.

The 12,000-ton ships' summer journey through the Northeast Passage was carried out with 3,500 tons of construction materials and parts for a Siberian power station on board. Once completed, the voyage will have shortened the traditional commercial sea route (通道) from the Far East to Europe--via (经过) the Suez Canal--by more than 4,000 nautical miles.

Russian officials are now hoping that the achievement will result in an "Arctic Rush" with the northern sea route becoming a powerful summer competitor to the Suez and Panama canals. They have offered to cut ice-breaker fees in the Northeast Passage to encourage major shipping

companies to start using it.

The new route could bring in Russia's economic fortunes. Throughout history, the country has been searching for a warm-water port that would provide sea routes open year-round. But the economic advantages are balanced by the disastrous (灾难性的) environmental news that the journey brings about.

"This is further proof (证据) that climate change is happening now," said Melanie Duchin, Arctic Expedition leader on board the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise, who added that the development put greater pressure on world leaders to agree a major emission (排放) cut at their Copenhagen meeting in December. "This is not a cause for celebration but cause for immediate action," she said.

72. Which correctly describes the route of the German-owned ships?

A. Far East--Sues Canal—Europe B. South Korea--the Arctic--Dutch

C. South Korea--the Arctic—Siberia D. The Atlantic--Suez Canal--Dutch

73. What does "Arctic Rush" refer to according to the text?

A. Shipping companies. B. Business on the route.

C. Traveling across the Arctic. D. Competing between countries.

74. Why didn't the Russians open the route in history?

A. It would cost a lot. B. It was too dangerous.

C. It was only discovered recently. D. It brought about environmental problems.

75. What does the underlined word "This" in the last paragraph stand for?

A. Climate change. B. A major emission cut.

C. The opening of the route. D. The Copenhagen meeting.

A Report on Weekend Activities
Since the regular school- running policy was performed, the students now have more free time on Saturday and Sundays. So the English Club in our school invited me to do an investigation on how the students spend their weekends. I find that almost half of the students study by themselves at home.About 25% of them prefer to watch TV or listen to music. 20% of them like to chat onlinne or play computer games, while 10% of them of tehn help their parents do housework. Only a small number of them go in for sports or travelling.
In my opinion, all of us students should have a proper plan for our weekends. We should make good use of our time, learning more knowledge, developing our interests,...We should also learn to relax, but I don't think it's a good idea to spend too much time watching TV , chatting online or playing computer games.(124 words)
